I believe they highlight or enhance the burn areas for better viewing. The smoke is the real deal.
 
Amazing to see this from such an aerial POV. Here in Lesbos the sunset was very red last night and I wondered if that could be from the fires, even though they are so so far off. Curious. Amazing power of nature as it consumes the earth.
