Basin Complex Fire, Evening 4th Of July

Big Sur's Basin Complex Fire has now consumed 68,712 acres with minimal containment. Winds hit the fire from the N/W gusting to 12 mph. You can see in the GeoMAC map below how close the Basin Complex is to the now cold Indians Fire perimeter. No way to confirm this but it's a good guess fire officials want to use the Indians Fire burn as an anchor. They may get their wish tomorrow.

Random (unedited) notes from the evening ICS-209 report;

Major problems and concerns (control problems, social/political/economic concerns or impacts, etc.) Relate critical resources needs identified above to the Incident Action Plan.

"Fire continues to be very active on the northwestern and southern flanks and is threatening the communities of BIG SUR, CARMEL and LUCIA. Fire has jumped southern containment line and crews are attempting to hold a secondary dozer line with limited resources. Structures, heavy fuel loads due to sudden oak death and active fire behavior on the southern end and north of Pfeiffer State Park are challenging containment actions. East Zone: Numerous structures and improvements located in the proximity to Carmel Valley Road and Tassajara Road areas with limited access. Extremely steep and rugged terrain with continuous heavy fuel loading. HEBM is needed for military assets".

Today's observed fire behavior West Zone:

"Fire exhibited backing towards the community of BIG SUR. Higher humidities moderated fire behavior in other divisions. Single tree torching and short uphill runs were observed elsewhere. East Zone: In the Rodeo Flats Area, fire became active with 50-60 acre run that stayed with in control lines. Isolated pockets of surface fire with occasional single tree torching and moderated fire behavior due to higher relative humidity".

Remarks:

"The fire has entered into the community of BIG SUR on the east side. The Basin Complex is in unified command with the USFS Dietrich (west), McGowan (east), CalFire R. Hutchinson, Big Sur VFB and Mid-Coast FB and Monterey County Sheriff's Office. Cost breakdown west: $12964700. east: $3,600,000. Personnel: West 1346 East: 449, reports received for committed resources have not totaled correctly causing delay".

Significant events today (closures, evacuations, significant progress made, etc.):
West Zone:

"Several spot fires in the Dolan Canyon area have crossed the control lines and crews are working on them. A mandatory evacuation and road closure is in effect for the entire community of BIG SUR and both sides of Hwy 1 from Lime Kiln State Park north to Palo Colorado Road. An evacuation advisory remains in place for residents of the Palo Colorado Canyon from Hwy 1 to the Pico Blanco Boy Scout Camp. East Zone: Continue structure preparation on Carmel Valley Road and Cachagua areas".

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,

Thank you for coming to Big Sur and learning about the Basin Complex fire. We need your help. There are not enough firefighters or equipment to do the job, and so Big Sur residents are risking their lives to protect homes and businesses. There are many volunteers ready and willing to assist in the effort but they are not being utilized. Please help by marshalling more personnel and equipment - such as large tanker airplanes - and by incorporating local resident volunteers into this effort.

Our gratitude goes out to the firefighters who have and continue to do wshat they can. Together, we can do this!

Thank you!
