Telegraph Fire Not Near & No Threat to Yosemite
The national cable news channels are headlining the Telegraph Fire as a "Yosemite Fire".
The fire is burning near and around Mariposa, (population of 1,400, [County 17,000]), 27 miles from Yosemite National Park.

Great maps, and always helpful information here! Just a bit of clarification for the record: population of Mariposa not 17,000 but 1,700. This gets corrected elsewhere of course.
Looks like you had better disregard my last comment about the population. I am seeing 1,700 elsewhere as if it were the population of the town of Mariposa, but I find that the population of the county of Mariposa is actually around 17,000, which must be what you meant.
I knew I made a mistake on the population of Mariposa then kept reminding myself to go back and fix it.
I knew better. Spent my early days attending the Mariposa County Fair each summer. Couldn't have grown that fast!
Thanks for the mention!

Mike, returning to these numbers, now I see the San Francisco Chronicle giving the population of the town of Mariposa as 1,400. With people constantly coming and going in the town, it might not be easy to pin down these statistics... In any case, it's the afternoon article of July 30, URL is http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/07/30/BA611222SP.DTL
The article was OK. Someone posted a link to me in the comment section.
One of the more 'sane' comment sections I have ever read on SFGate. Some decent debate on burn vs. fight.
Thanks for the comment.
