Marek Fire Ushers In The SoCal Fall Fire Season

 
Update: 6:00 pm per Inciweb, and local news sources. Two structures destroyed, numerous vehicles, 2,000 acres, minimal flame front.

Southern California's first fire event of this Indian Summer/Santa Ana wind season began at 2:00 am this morning and has consumed 500 + acres. The fire is technically in the Angeles National Forest west of Little Tujunga Canyon and Lopez Canyon north of the 210 Freeway.

No structures have been damaged though residents are evacuating horses. Overhead shots from ABC News 7 in Los Angeles shows an overwhelming firefighting force on the scene. Firefighters are backfiring and setting up structure protection groups just in case.

The predicted high winds are not due to until later this evening. With history as a guide the Marek Fire is the opening act.

I live in Tujunga, very near by Kagel Canyon where the fire is. My friends were evacuated around 2-3 am Sunday morning. I tried to help find a place for 6 goats, but the goat-owner just stored them in her car ... needless to say, the car is trashed. I heard folks are not allowed to go home tonight. And the fire is now at 2,000 acres. Bummer. My couch is available ... but everyone seems to be taken care of for the night.
BTW, I really appreciated your coverage of the Big Sur/Tassajara fires this past summer. I usually vacation at Tassajara every year and your site was very informative.
