Comments:
I am struck by the "small" size of the destructive fires we've had these past few days. Fires that aren't many tens of thousands of acres in size are doing tremendous damage.

These fires have brought Mike Davis' book on the (sub)urban/wild interface to mind: Ecology of Fear: Los Angeles and the Imagination of Disaster. Not without controversy is his chapter on "The Case for Letting Malibu Burn." Also his collection of essays, Dead Cities: And Other Tales, pertains as well.

Mere words cannot express the gratitude we owe those who put themselves in harm's way to protect the property and lives of those who have chosen to live in terrain the burns ever several decades.
