La Brea Fire Meets Zaca Fire Perimeter

 
The La Brea Fire has pushed hard to the south and has met the two year old boundary of the Zaca Fire. The current acreage is presented as 25,000 or so but that is a fabrication, this fire is double that if the GeoMac heat impressions are accurate.


So what happens now? We know the Zaca Fire dozer lines are still in place so firefighters can anchor off those. Sisquoc Creek also offers a key potential fuel break for firefighters. If the La Brea blaze spots over and into the Zaca burn it will find two year old growth, a far cry from the 80 year growth it is feeding from currently.

I expect the fire to keep moving east as well as west. At this pace anything north of the Zaca perimeter that is green in the image above will burn. I would be surprised if this fire is held to under 100,000 acres.

If it continues at its current rate, it looks like it will run into the 166 at some point in the not-to-distant future.

Hi Kate. This is an amazing fire. I wonder if they are sticking with the "Coyote Tactic" crews. That didn't seem to work too well.

There's a new fire on the Santa Cruz coast, started last night at the end of Empire Grade about 7:40pm. They're calling it the Swanton Fire--burned about 2,000 acres so far. Here in Bonny Doon, we've got lots of smoke and helicopters overhead. It's hard to get news. Can you tell us anything?

La Brea is 3rd megafire in 3 years on the Los Padres NF. That is no accident. Unstated policy has been to burn fuels in massive landscape-scale chunks. We could debate pros and cons, but it would be after-the-fact. Let It Burn policies were never subject to any prior public debate or NEPA process.
